ROUTINE OPERATIONS How it all works
We come directly to your house. We just need level parking space and access to your electric supply. Then the patient is examined and weighed and a pre-med injection given. This reduces anxiety and lessens the dose of anaesthetic needed. Once a little dozy the patient is taken into the unit and the operation performed. As soon as this is all over we will tell you how the operation has been and the patient will be carried back into your house as soon as he/she is awake and alert. This service is totally geared to provide personal care for your pet and to reduce the stress of undergoing an operation at a distant surgery.
NEUTERING
CATS
We can spay and castrate cats from 3 months of age. This may seem young but we have had a lot of experience of early neutering in rescue centres. There are benefits of neutering at less than 6 months. Cats can be neutered at any age but it is best to avoid spaying females when they are in season (calling).
DOGS
Bitches can be spayed from 4 months old and dogs neutered from 5-6 months. There are health benefits to spaying bitches before their first season. However we can spay and castrate dogs at any age. Bitches need to be out of season; and also not over-weight!
Where possible we use buried dissolvable sutures so that your pet does not lick or chew out the stitches. Most patients receive pain relief injections and 3 days of tablets.
RABBITS
We can spay or castrate your rabbit. This often improves behaviour as well as preventing unwanted pregnancies!
DENTISTRY
We have an advanced dental unit including air compressed drills, scaler and polisher.
All dental cases start with scaling the tartar off the teeth, examing the teeth thoroughly and extracting any diseased teeth. Remaining teeth are then polished; this reduces the future build-up of plaque.
LUMPS AND BUMPS
Any abnormal lump on your pet is best investigated. We can come to you to perform a biopsy , arrange for pathology and then removal of the lump if necessary. Many clients choose excision of an abnormal lump first of all and then decide if to go for pathology or not. We can advise and treat as appropriate for your pet and the situation.
MICRO-CHIPPING
Pets can be permanently identified by implanting a Pet_Id microchip under the skin. This is the best way of increasing the chance of a lost pet being returned to you. ( Although best not to lose it at all!!) Micro-chipping can be done on it's own, with vaccination, or while your pet is under anaesthetic following an operation. Your pet's details are then logged onto a central database. This also gives you 4 weeks free insurance.
VACCINATIONS
Puppies are vaccinated at 8 and 10 weeks . This is essential to provide immunity against distemper, parvo, hepatitis, leptospirosis and para-influenza.
Kittens are vaccinated at 9 and 12 weeks. This provides immunity against infectious enteritis, cat flu viruses and feline leukaemia virus
Visiting your new puppy or kitten at home allows us to see them in their own surroundings, to fully discuss worming and parasite control, feeding and behaviour.
ACUPUNCTURE
Alison has an IVAS Certificate in Acupuncture and has been using this treatment for over 10 years. She has also trained in Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine for animals. Many conditions respond very well to acupuncture especially arthritic and geriatric problems. We advise you to phone and discuss your pet's problem to see if acupuncture would be of benefit.
BLOOD TESTS
We can visit your home to take blood samples from your pet. This can be, for example, if you would like a check on an older pet or if on advice from your own vet. Samples are sent to a large veterinary laboratory in Newton Abbot. Results can be phoned, faxed or e-mailed to you.
